Tafla af því að það var ódýrara að nota hana en pappír og vegna þess að tilhlökkunin að komast yfir á pappír hvatti mann til dáða að vanda sig. Ég var 6 ára í þá daga og ég man ennþá eftir þeirri gleði, að fá að skrifa með blekpenna í stílabókina mína, 6 mánuðum eftir að ég var hættur að skrifa á litlu töfluna.<span id="more-957"></span></p>
<p>Sem kennari hef ég tekið eftir því að krakkar á öllum aldri vilja fá að skrifa á töfluna. Þegar ég segi skrifa, meina ég teikna, leika sér, skreyta, hugsa upphátt, leysa þrautir, leggja fyrir þrautir &#8230; skiptir ekki máli hvort taflan er gamaldags fyrir krít, nútímalegri fyrir túss, blönduð fyrir krít og túss eða gagnvirk og tölvutengd. Nemendur hafa gaman af þessu tæki, töflunni.</p>
<p>Það snerti við kennarataugina í mér, þegar ég á kaffisýningu á dögunum í London sá baklýsta töflur úr gleri með svörtum bakgrunni. Þær voru hugsaðar fyrir veitingahús, sem handskrifuð skilti. Ég sá fyrir mér ofursvala upplýsta og skrautlega töflu fyrir minnisatriði vikunnar, gullkorn dagsins, formúluna sem nota á næstu tvo daga eða regluna sem á alls ekki að gleyma.</p>
<p>Í skólastofunni minni ætla ég að hafa þrjár svona töflur! Ég ætla aldrei að skrifa á þær, heldur láta nemendum mínum það eftir að skrifa það mikilvægasta á þær og gera það með sínum hætti. Síðan eiga þeir að glósa eða taka ljósmynd af listaverkinu og setja í möppu, þannig að þegar kemur að námsmati, eru þeirra verk til prófs.</p>
<p>Ég er ekki viss um að skólastjórar leggi í það að kaupa svona töflur, en það má alltaf láta sig dreyma. Ég held að tafla sem þessi sé nógu ódýr og nógu gott kennslutæki, til að skóli fjárfesti frekar í tuttugu svoleiðis í stað einnar gagnvirkrar töflu!</p>

Það er e.t.v. til marks um tíðarandann, að væntingar um nám hafa snúist upp í andhverfu sína. Miðað við það, er tilgangslaust að bregðast við siðferðilegu hruni bankakerfis og í stjórnmálum með aukinni kennslu í siðfræði. Nær væri að líta það hvernig fólk tjáir sig, hvort það notar germynd eða þolmynd um alla hluti. Málið er nefnilega, að &#8220;það lendir enginn í vondum einkunnum&#8221;, og slæmur árangur í prófum er yfirleitt ekki öðrum um að kenna en bara mér. Ég klúðraði (germynd), ég lenti ekki í klúðri (þolmynd).</p>

<p>Sumt er ekki hægt að kenna öðruvísi en með daglegri umgengni um fyrirbærið. <span id="more-931"></span>Ég hef verið í vandræðum með að kenna 6. bekkingum á klukku. <p>Greinilegt að sumir menntskælingar eru í svipuðum vanda, eins og <a href="http://www.sfjalar.net/2010/03/28/klukkan-hva%C3%B0/">S. Fjalar komst að</a>. Ég ætla að nota verkefnin sjálfur til að hjálpa mínum að rifja upp og gá hvort við verðum einhvers vísari um hegðun þeirra.</p>

Some of you who have small children may have perhaps been put in the<br />
embarrassing position of being unable to do your child&#8217;s arithmetic homework<br />
because of the current revolution in mathematics teaching known as the New<br />
Math. So as a public service here tonight I thought I would offer a brief<br />
lesson in the New Math. Tonight we&#8217;re going to cover subtraction. This is the<br />
first room I&#8217;ve worked for a while that didn&#8217;t have a blackboard so we will<br />
have to make due with more primitive visual aids, as they say in the &#8220;ed biz.&#8221;<br />
Consider the following subtraction problem, which I will put up here: 342 -<br />
173.</p>
<p>Now remember how we used to do that. three from two is nine; carry the one, and<br />
if you&#8217;re under 35 or went to a private school you say seven from three is six,<br />
but if you&#8217;re over 35 and went to a public school you say eight from four is<br />
six; carry the one so we have 169, but in the new approach, as you know, the<br />
important thing is to understand what you&#8217;re doing rather than to get the right<br />
answer. Here&#8217;s how they do it now.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t take three from two,<br />
Two is less than three,<br />
So you look at the four in the tens place.<br />
Now that&#8217;s really four tens,<br />
So you make it three tens,<br />
Regroup, and you change a ten to ten ones,<br />
And you add them to the two and get twelve,<br />
And you take away three, that&#8217;s nine.<br />
Is that clear?</p>
<p>Now instead of four in the tens place<br />
You&#8217;ve got three,<br />
&#8216;Cause you added one,<br />
That is to say, ten, to the two,<br />
But you can&#8217;t take seven from three,<br />
So you look in the hundreds place.</p>
<p>From the three you then use one<br />
To make ten ones&#8230;<br />
(And you know why four plus minus one<br />
Plus ten is fourteen minus one?<br />
&#8216;Cause addition is commutative, right.)<br />
And so you have thirteen tens,<br />
And you take away seven,<br />
And that leaves five&#8230;</p>
<p>Well, six actually.<br />
But the idea is the important thing.</p>
<p>Now go back to the hundreds place,<br />
And you&#8217;re left with two.<br />
And you take away one from two,<br />
And that leaves&#8230;?</p>
<p>Everybody get one?<br />
Not bad for the first day!</p>
<p>Hooray for new math,<br />
New-hoo-hoo-math,<br />
It won&#8217;t do you a bit of good to review math.<br />
It&#8217;s so simple,<br />
So very simple,<br />
That only a child can do it!<br />
Now that actually is not the answer that I had in mind, because the book that I<br />
got this problem out of wants you to do it in base eight. But don&#8217;t panic. Base<br />
eight is just like base ten really &#8211; if you&#8217;re missing two fingers. Shall we<br />
have a go at it? Hang on.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t take three from two,<br />
Two is less than three,<br />
So you look at the four in the eights place.<br />
Now that&#8217;s really four eights,<br />
So you make it three eights,<br />
Regroup, and you change an eight to eight ones,<br />
And you add them to the two,<br />
and you get one-two base eight,<br />

<p><a href="http://www.archive.org/details/audio_bookspoetry">Fleiri hljóðbækur og lesin ljóð má finna hér</a>. Hljóðbókin, eða það að taka þátt í að byggja upp hljóðbókasafn ætti að vera hluti af skólastarfi. Gefa nemendum, sem hafa þroska til þess færi á að lesa inn á tölvu það sem þau fást við og gefa síðan almennum svæðum skrárnar, þannig að hægt verði að hlusta á sögur, ljóð og efni almenns eðlis af tónhlöðum eða símum sem ráða við það.</p>

In the middle of the night<br />
Two dead boys got up to fight<br />
Back to back they faced one another<br />
Drew their swords and shot each other<br />
A deaf policeman heard the noise<br />
And he ran and he killed those two dead boys<br />
And if you don&#8217;t believe it&#8217;s true<br />
Ask the blind man;<br />
He saw it too.<span id="more-914"></span></p>
<p>This little backwards poem was an instant hit with some of my students. They liked it so much they learned it by heart. One of them tried to translate it into Icelandic.</p>
<p>A longer and more learned version may be found at the <a href="http://www.folklore.bc.ca/Onefineday.htm">British Columbia Folklore Society</a> website.</p>
<p>It runs like this:</p>
<p>One fine day in the middle of the night,<br />
Two dead boys* got up to fight, [*or men]<br />
Back to back they faced each other,<br />
Drew their swords and shot each other,</p>
<p>One was blind and the other couldn&#8217;t, see<br />
So they chose a dummy for a referee.<br />
A blind man went to see fair play,<br />
A dumb man went to shout &#8220;hooray!&#8221;</p>
<p>A paralysed donkey passing by,<br />
Kicked the blind man in the eye,<br />
Knocked him through a nine inch wall,<br />
Into a dry ditch and drowned them all,</p>
<p>A deaf policeman heard the noise,<br />
And came to arrest the two dead boys,<br />
If you don&#8217;t believe this story’s true,<br />
Ask the blind man he saw it too!</p>
